Born in Deva, Romania, Dr. Mihai Vatca began studying piano at the age of six. From 2006 to 2012, he trained at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca under the guidance of Dr. Monica Noveanu and later Dr. Daniel Goiti. He earned both his Bachelor’s (2010) and first Master’s Degree (2012) in Piano Performance. During the years, he performed in prestigious master classes with Léa-Jeanne Litzler Adam (Académie des Artistes Musiciens, Paris) and the legendary Jerome Lowenthal (The Juilliard School, New York).

Dr. Vatca has earned recognition in more than fifty national and international competitions and has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across the United States, Romania, France, Colombia, and Bolivia.

In 2015, he completed a second Master’s Degree in Piano Collaborative and Chamber Music at Sam Houston State University. He then pursued his Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Houston, specializing in Piano Performance with an emphasis in Piano Collaborative and Chamber Music, graduating in 2019. Following this, he was awarded the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts Fellowship, completing a Professional Certificate in Piano Collaborative in 2021.

Teaching has been an integral part of Dr. Vatca’s career since 2005. He has served as Piano Professor at the Augustin Bena School of Music (2010–2013), Teaching Assistant at Sam Houston State University (2013–2015), and Teaching Assistant at the University of Houston, Moores School of Music (2015–2019). In 2019, he joined the piano faculty at Sam Houston State University, where he currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Piano. He is also the founder and director of the Mihai Vatca Music Conservatory in The Woodlands, Texas, a highly regarded private school where his students have won numerous awards at local, national, and international competitions.

Dr. Vatca’s professional involvement extends to serving as an adjudicator for piano competitions and festivals and maintaining active membership in organizations such as MTNA, TMTA, CMTA, NFMC, TFMC, and CJMC. He has collaborated with the Houston Symphony Chorus and the Grammy Award–winning Houston Chamber Choir. In recognition of his outstanding teaching, he was honored with the Kawai Medallion Educator Award in 2021.

Deeply committed to his community, Dr. Vatca has collaborated with the Woodlands Symphony and the Woodlands Concert Band. Since 2014, he has also served as pianist for Christ Church United Methodist in The Woodlands.

Dr. Vatca currently resides in The Woodlands, Texas, with his wife.
